Improving Your Home
I've lived in my East York detached two story home for over fifteen years, and during that time I have made many changes, both inside and out. These modifications, like finishing off the basement, and adding another bathroom, have not only enchanced the value of my property but I feel I have tweaked the character of my house to make it my own. Your home is your castle, and you should feel proud of it every time you walk up the path to the front door. And, once inside, it should feel like you are indeed 'home'.
Your home will always need your full attention. If you do not maintain your properties exterior (roof, foundation, gutters etc.) then it will deteriorate, and begin showing its age far too soon. The outer skin of your home is vital in protecting the integrity within. If not maintained then damage to the inside will occur resulting in a major repair bill. Example: if your foundation leaks then your basement could be flooded during a storm, and this might possibly lead to mold issues. My modest home is nearly one hundred years old (built in the early 1920's) but I feel it is still in good condition, and should last at least another hundred! But, only if I take care of it properly. Now, not everyone has the knowledge, tools or time needed to work on their property themselves so a 'contractor' is often called in to assist.
Once finished with the maintenance aspects of the exterior of the home then you can concentrate on creating your own beautiful backyard oasis; one complete with Koi fish pond, waterfall and attractive trees native to Ontario. I have done all of this, and more, and always find it a pleasure to watch the brightly coloured fish swim about the lilies. Summertime is indeed the time to sit outside, and enjoy the fruits of your labour. Take pride in your accomplishments as your home is really an extension of you.
Sometimes during the winter months when you are cooped up inside to escape the biting cold, there are projects that do not necessarily need immediately done but you'd like to do them anyway. By that I mean, say, your merely tired of the paint colours throughout and you'd simply like to freshen up the walls with an explosive new and vibrant choice. Or you'd like to lay down new lush carpeting or some other type of flooring. Perhaps you want to redo that aging bathroom because you're had enough of the outdated fixtures! Or, as I did, put down a new kitchen countertop - one made from recycled glass! Note: I like to make my home as green as possible, and as easy on the environment.
