Topham Park

Topham Park, is a small, well-kept neighbourhood located within the larger framework of the greater East York area. Modest bungalows, 1 1/2 story and 2 stories homes, many with lovely porches, grace the areas noted wide boulevards and greenspaces. In the summertime, sprawling gardens and manicured lawns, fill the area with beauty. Clients of mine that have purchased in the area, have mentioned that to them, the neighbourhood resembles, and feels like a small town, nestled somewhere inside the city of Toronto! The area is home to many growing families, and their children can be seen playing outside all year long. This 'community' aspect makes Topham Park a place everyone calls 'home'.

History
World War II, was a great turning point for several areas in East York (like Woodbine Gardens), but none more so that of 'Topham Park'. Prior to the war, the entire area consisted of apple orchards and a somewhat sprawling, flat topography. But, as the war was drawing to a close the crown decided to buy up all the land, and commissioned the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation to build homes for returning veterans and their families. This in turn lead to several of the streets being named after combat veterans. Merritt Road, for example, was named to honour Canada's second Victoria Cross winner, Lieutenant Colonel Cecil Merritt. The Topham Park neighbourhood is so named after its central local park, which was itself named after another Victoria Cross winner, Frederick Topham. Mr. Topham lived in the area for many years.

Neighbourhood Restaurants/Shops/Malls
The Topham Park neighbourhood of East York, does not have any large malls or big box stores within its boundaries. There are some strip plazas, and a commercial district - especially along the neighbourhood's outer boundaries (St. Clair Avenue East, O'Connor Drive, and Victoria Park Avenue) but, within very close proximity there is an interesting mix of indoor/outdoor malls, numerous strip plazas, and independantly owned retail shops and restaurants. These are predominately in the Clairlea/Oakridge neighbourhood which is directly adjacent to Topham Park. Certainly, the largest indoor mall in the area is 'Eglinton Square'.
This more than 80 store mall (including anchor tenants the 'Bay' and food giant 'Metro') opened it's doors in 1954, and was one of the first malls located in Toronto. In its beginings, it was considered a very prestigious mall, so much so, that Queen Elizabeth herself made an official visit in 1959. While there, she also visited the 'Golden Mile' plaza, which is located directly across the street on Eglinton Avenue and Victoria Park. This 'Golden Mile' neighbourhood area, has had a massive resurgence in the past couple of years, and many big box stores (like WalMart) and restaurants (like East Side Marios) have positioned themselves there, drawing business away from the Eglinton Square shopping centre itself. Another plaza/mall (which I frequent regularily) is located a short distance to the south of the Woodbine Gardens neighbourhood. It's called 'Shoppers World On The Danforth', and it's main anchor tenents are: Zellers, Metro Groceries, and Shoppers Drug Mart.

Parks
As mentioned, the 'Topham Park' neighbourhood is so named after it's centrally located park, and playground facilities. The areas sporting activities revolve around this greenspace, and is equally enjoyed by kids, parents and even grand parents! One of the predominent pastimes played here is softball. The area is home to its own minor league softball league, which is enthusiatically supported by local merchants and businesses alike.
Greater East York is noted for the number, size and multifunctionality of its parks, and one of the largest of these is Taylor Creek Park, which is slightly south of the 'Topham Park' neighbourhood. It is an extensive park, and connects to many others. I have bicycle ridden from Dawes Road all the way to Edwards Gardens (at
Leslie Street and Lawrence Avenue), without ever leaving the park system itself! As well, Taylor Massey Creek - which is a tributary of the Don River and 16 kilometeres long - runs through the park system. The creek was so named after the wealthy families of Taylor and Massey (of Massey/Ferguson, which manufactured farm equipment). Both families owned rather sizeable estates in the area at one time.
